1 dead, 5 hurt, 2 critical in wrong-way crash

COLUMBUS – One person was killed and five others taken to hospitals as a result of a wrong-way crash involving multiple vehicles that shut down an East Side interstate for several hours early Monday.

Meanwhile, a child was killed when they were struck by a pickup truck they had just climbed out of on a street on the East Side.

A Ford Focus traveling eastbound in the in the westbound lanes of I-70 approaching U.S. Route 33 at 2:00 a.m. clipped the driver’s side of a westbound Kia Seltos, which spun counter-clockwise and flipped twice before coming to rest next to the median wall facing southbound, according to investigators with the Columbus Division of Police Accident Investigation Unit.

The Focus continued eastbound and struck a Honda Accord head-on, which rotated counter-clockwise and came to rest on the right shoulder facing southbound, police said.

The front seat passenger of the Focus was pronounced dead at the scene while the driver was taken to OhioHealth Grant Medical Center in serious condition and the rear seat passenger was transported to Grant in critical condition, police said.

The driver of the Accord was transported in critical condition at Grant and both occupants of the Seltos were transported in stable condition to OSU East Hospital.

The names of the victims were not released Monday morning.

Three other vehicles were struck and ran over debris but there were no reported injuries from these vehicles, investigators said.

A child was killed when they were struck by a pickup truck they had just exited outside a home at 2869 East 6th Avenue Sunday night, police said.

A Ford pickup truck stopped on the street at approximately 7:03 p.m. and some children got out of the vehicle, Joseph Fihe of the Division of Police Public Information Office said.

As the vehicle was pulling away from the home, a child ran in front of the truck and was struck.
