1 man dead in road-rage shooting on downtown interstate

COLUMBUS – Columbus police say they have located a pickup truck which was involved in a road-rage shooting incident on a downtown freeway that left a Grove City man dead and shut down the interstate for several hours during the Friday afternoon rush-hour.

UPDATE 11/11/23 3:39 p.m.:
The victim in this case has been identified as Bret Bennett, 52 of Grove City.
The other involved vehicle in this case — a 2017 Ford F150 pickup truck has been located.

It was one of two apparently unrelated shootings in the same area in less than 10 hours.

Officers responding to a reported shooting in the eastbound lanes of I-670 between the N. 4th Street and Cleveland Avenue exits at 5:02 p.m. found a Bennett suffering from an apparent gunshot wound, Sgt. Scott LeRoy of the Homicide Unit said.

Hw was taken to OhioHealth Grant Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 5:26 p.m., LeRoy said.

The other vehicle involved fled the scene.

Detectives are also investigating another freeway shooting, which left one person injured.

At 2:38 a.m. Saturday, officers were dispatched to the area of I-71 and I-670 where a victim told them they were struck by gunfire in their vehicle, from an unknown person, according to Sgt. Emanuel Edwards of the Felony Assault Unit.

The victim was transported to a local hospital, reportedly with a gunshot wound to the arm, and is expected to survive, Edwards said.

The identity of the victim has not been released and the investigation continues.

Suspect arrested in Berwick shooting

A 21-year-old man was in jail Saturday morning, charged with murder in the fatal shooting of another man on the Southeast Side Friday afternoon.

Thomas Lacey III is accused of shooting Michael Holland at approximately 5:52 p.m. in the 2800 block of Landon Drive, Sgt. Edward Powell III said.

Officers were dispatched to the scene on a report of a shooting during a disturbance found the 41-year-old Holland suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.

Powell says the officers administered first aid until Columbus Division of Fire paramedics arrived and transported Holland to a local hospital where he died at 6:28 p.m.

Lacey remained at scene and was taken to the Franklin County Jail, Powell said.
