COLUMBUS – COLUMBUS – It is officially the Year of Ohio State Parks, celebrating their three-fourths of century of providing Ohioans and visitors with a variety of outdoor experiences.
Gov. Mike DeWine issued the official proclamation Friday, designating 2024 as the Year of Ohio State Parks.
The declaration marks the 75th anniversary of Ohio state parks and “underscores the state’s unwavering commitment to preserving its natural wonders and expanding outdoor adventures,” DeWine said.
Ohio started designating properties as official state parks in 1949 when lawmakers created the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, which is also celebrating its own 75th anniversary.
DeWine says his proclamation highlights the role state parks have played in expanding access to the outdoors for people of all backgrounds.
Through a variety of activities and events, state parks foster stronger social ties, celebrate the state’s culture, and showcase its ecosystem, DeWine said.
