COLUMBUS – Three suspects, all under 20 years of age, have been arrested in connection with the beating death of a man outside a South Side grocery store earlier this month.

Homicide Unit detectives on Wednesday charged Jamarion Evans-Bennett, 19, Dionta Hughes, 18, and a 17-year-old boy with murder in the death of Donald Smith Jr., 53, and the three were all arrested the same day and taken to jail, Sgt. James Marable said.

Police say the three suspects got into an altercation with customers inside the Kroger store in the 3600 block of S. High Street on Dec. 6th, and were asked to leave by security, Marable said.

Once outside, the three suspects started fight with Smith, who was taken to a local hospital in critical condition while the suspects drove away, Marable said.
