COLUMBYS – Days before early voting begins for the November 7 general election, supporters and opponents of a ballot issue that would enshrine abortion rights in the Ohio constitution held rallies in Columbus and other cities to make their case to voters.
Tuesday is the deadline for voters to register for the November election and early in-person voting begins Wednesday.
Ohioans United for Reproductive Rights scheduled “Bans Off Our Bodies” rallies in Columbus and five other cities Sunday in support of Issue 1, the Right to Reproductive Freedom amendment.
Ohio Right to Life held a Mass for Life at St. Joseph’s Cathedral, followed by a rally at the Statehouse and a March for Life in downtown Columbus Friday.
The U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling last year that overturned Roe v. Wade kicked the abortion question back to the states.
Since then, voters in both Democratic and deeply Republican states — California, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Montana and Vermont — have voted to protect abortion rights in one form or another.
Abortion rights questions are planned in more than half a dozen states next year.
