Circleville police chief says K-9 handler was deceptive during probe of dog attack

COLUMBUS (AP) — Documents pertaining to the firing of a Circleville police officer who released his police dog on a surrendering truck driver show he was disciplined days before his termination for his behavior after the incident.

Documents released by the Circleville Police Department show the chief met twice with Officer Ryan Speakman to discuss reports of Speakman crying, talking to employees, families and K-9 trainers and exhibiting stress-related behavior after the July 4 incident.

He was fired soon after being placed on paid administrative leave.

The July 4 episode began when troopers tried to stop a truck that failed to halt for an inspection.

The driver was treated afterward for dog bites
