City finalizes agreement to shutter nuisance bar

COLUMBUS — The city of Columbus has reached a final accord with the owners of a troubled North Side bar that will result in the indefinite closing of the doors for Jack’s Corner Pub.

Under an agreement signed in Franklin County Environmental Court, the bar located at 2480 Summit Street, north of the OSU campus area, will remain closed indefinitely, while the owners place the bar’s liquor permit “in safekeeping” with the state and maintain the property until it is sold, according to the official of Columbus City Attorney Zach Klein.

In exchange, the city will withdraw its objections to Jack’s liquor permit renewal and will retain the option to object to the transfer of the permit if new owners request to use the permit, Klein said.

“Today’s order officially ends the safety threat Jack’s posed to the neighborhood and allows the City to have a hand in what comes next for this property. We want to see a business come in and be safe and successful. It’s what the neighborhood deserves,” Klein said.

The agreement follows a spate of violence and nuisance behavior at the bar, scene of two reported homicides in the past two years, including one in March 2022 and another on July 28, 2023, when a suspect pulled a gun in the midst of a brawl and shot a victim multiple times, killing them, Klein said.

The bar has been the scene of dozens of police runs and calls for service over the past two years, including repeated reports of shots fired, brawls erupting both inside and outside the bar, drug overdoses and vehicle theft, Klein said.
