COLUMBUS – A man is facing charges after police say he tried to bring a BB gun, a machete and a hatchet onto the grounds of a West Side school Wednesday afternoon.
Police say they arrested Bryan Johnson, 43, after he showed up at Westmoor Middle School, in the 3000 block of Valley View Drive, with a holstered handgun and a machete, saying he was there to pick up his child, according to investigators with the Columbus Division of Police Gun Crimes Unit.
A caller told police that Johnson arrived at the school just after 2:20 p.m. with a handgun that was in a holster on his right hip and a machete attached to his leg, saying he was at the school to pick up his child who was a student there, police said.
The caller also told the police the man had a hatchet and they gave police his name and a description.
Officers responding to the report located Johnson just outside of the school and recovered a machete, hatchet, and Glock manufactured BB gun from the suspect’s vehicle that was parked at the school, detectives said.
Johnson was charged illegal conveyance of a deadly weapon in a school safety zone.
