Grand jury indicts two in connection with I-70 shootout

COLUMBUS – A federal grand jury has indicted two central Ohio men on charges stemming from a robbery spree that led to a deadly shootout with police on a West Side interstate and days-long manhunt.

Aden Abdullahi Jama, 20, of Reynoldsburg and Fazsal M. Darod, 23, of Columbus have been charged with aiding and abetting bank robbery and aiding and abetting the use of a firearm in a crime of violence, according to US attorney Kenneth Parker.

The pair, along with a third suspect, allegedly committed the crimes on July 6, when they robbed a Fifth Third bank in Hilliard and fled in a vehicle stolen from a Whitehall dealership.

A pursuit ended in a shootout on I-70 near W. Mound Street where a Columbus Police officer was seriously injured and the third suspect in the car with Darod and Jama was killed.

The United States Marshals’ Southern Ohio Fugitive Apprehension Strike Team arrested Darod the following day outside his Columbus home and marshals and Homeland Security Investigation agents arrested Jama at Chicago O’Hare International Airport on July 8, as he prepared to flee the country for Turkey.
