Homeowner shoots intruder to death

COLUMBUS – No charges had been filed early Sunday after police say a resident shot and killed a trespasser inside a South Side home Saturday night.

UPDATE 4/18/23 7:33 a.m.: The Franklin County Coroner’s office identified the decedent in this Homicide as Kevin Smith, 60, police said.

A caller to 911 at approximately 6:01 p.m. reported a trespasser in a home in the 600 block of E. Whittier Street and, before responding officers arrived at the scene, an additional call reported that the intruder had been shot by the homeowner, Columbus police Homicide Unit detectives said.

The homeowner, described as a man between 50 and 70 years of age, has not been charged with a crime and is not being named, police said.

Homicide unit investigators will send their findings on to the Franklin County Prosecutor’s office for review and any potential charges, police said.
