COLUMBUS – A Columbus man faces life in prison after being convicted of two counts of murder for killing the mother of his children.
Jurors found Cortez Jackson guilty in the 2021 murder of Alyse Edwards, his girlfriend at the time, with whom he had three children, according to a release from the office of Franklin County Prosecuting Attorney Gary Tyack.
Jackson, 33, had been charged with two counts of murder with a three-year firearm specification, as well as tampering with evidence with a one-year firearm specification and having weapons while under disability, Tyack said.
The jury found him not guilty on one murder count but guilty on the other and on the tampering-with-evidence charge.
Franklin County Court of Common Pleas Judge Karen Held Phipps, who presided over the trial, found Jackson guilty on the weapons-while-under-disability charge.
Columbus police officers dispatched to an apartment at 3740 Eakin Road on the Hilltop on Aug. 19, 2021, found Edwards with a gunshot wound to her abdomen and she died a short time later.
Jackson faces 18 years to life in prison when he is sentenced on June 1, Tyack said.
