Man indicted in toddler’s death in hit-skip

COLUMBUS – A Columbus man accused of hitting a 4-year-old boy with a stolen car and killing the child has been indicted by a Franklin County grand jury on multiple felony charges, according to a release from the office of Prosecuting Attorney G. Gary Tyack.

The grand jury on Friday returned a five-count indictment against Tyrell Shute, 24, of Columbus, was driving a stolen Kia Soul on July 22 when Columbus police officers attempted to pull him over on Greenfield Drive near the Southpark Apartments in Franklinton just before 9:00 p.m., Tyack’s office reported.

Shute drove over a curb in a parking area and onto a grassy area in the 700 block of Canonby Place where the car struck the boy as he was playing with his mother on the lawn outside the apartment complex.

The child was pronounced dead at Nationwide Children’s Hospital less than an hour after the incident, police said.

Shute fled the area on foot but was caught and arrested early the following morning.

Shute was indicted on one count of involuntary manslaughter, two counts of aggravated vehicular homicide, two counts of fleeing the police, one count of receiving stolen property, and one count of leaving the scene of an accident, all felonies which could result in a prison term of more than 15 years if Shute is convicted of all charges, Tyack’s office reported.
