Officer shoots teen driver after officer and second teen hit by car

COLUMBUS – Two teens and an officer were injured during a confrontation in a Southeast Side parking lot Saturday, when another officer fired at a suspect who struck the first officer and another teenager with a car.

Two Columbus police officers were working special duty at the Bingo Hall, 3300 Refugee Road at approximately 2:00 p.m. when a disturbance occurred in the parking lot involving two male black teenagers and a vehicle, according to a release from the Columbus Division of Police.

An officer was involved in a struggle with one of the teenagers when the officer was hit by the vehicle and the teenager was run over.

The second officer discharged a firearm, striking the driver of the vehicle who continued out of the parking lot and crashed into a car that was heading westbound on Refugee Road, police said.

The teenage driver and passenger were taken into custody and taken to Nationwide Children’s Hospital where police say they were in stable condition.

The officer involved in the struggle was taken to an area hospital in stable condition.

The driver and the passenger in the vehicle that was hit in the crash were treated by a paramedic at the scene.

No others were injured during the incident.

The officer-involved shooting is under investigation by The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation.
