Ohio reports record job numbers

COLUMBUS – Ohio’s statewide unemployment rate reached another historic low in July as the number of Ohioans who were working rose to its highest level on record.

The number of unemployed Ohioans has declined by 34,000 in the past 12 months while the unemployment rate fell 0.7%. (Ohio Dept. of Job & Family Services)

The unemployment rate fell from 3.4% in June to 3.3% in July as employers hired 12,100 new workers, bringing the number of workers who reported being employed to 5,639,200, according to data released by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services Friday.

Gov. Mike DeWine cheered the news as evidence that the state is “the heart of opportunity.”

“Our formula in Ohio is working, and today’s jobs news is proof of that,” he said.

This marks the lowest unemployment rate since reporting began in 1976 and the highest payroll employment since the state began reporting that data in 1990.

“We’ve had six months in a row that our unemployment rate has been below 4 percent, and we have gained 67,700 private sector jobs in the first seven months of 2023,” Lt. Gov. Jon Husted said.

The strongest job growth came in government, construction, and educational and health services.

The 3.3% jobless rate in Ohio was below the national average.
