Police: Newark man uses hatchet to break 37 windows in downtown businesses

NEWARK – Newark police say a 38-year-old man was arrested armed with a hatchet and is accused of breaking more than three dozen windows in dozen downtown businesses during an overnight vandalism spree.

Officers dispatched to respond to a report of gunfire and breaking glass in the area of the Courthouse Square at 2:46 a.m. Monday saw Joseph Davis, of Newark, break out the window of True Core Federal Credit Union on N. 2nd Street, Deputy Chief Craig Riley of the Newark Police Division said.

The officers detained Davis and recovered a hatchet they say he used to break 37 windows in 11 businesses while walking eastbound on N. Park Place, Riley said.

Davis was taken to a hospital where he was treated for injuries suffered while breaking the windows.

When he was released from the hospital, Davis was charged with vandalism and taken to jail, Riley said.
