Scout’s Honor Law open gates to BSA settlements

COLUMBUS – Gov. Mike DeWine on Thursday signed Ohio’s Scout’s Honor Law, paving the way for Ohioans to receive the total amount of monetary damages they are owed from lawsuits against the Boy Scouts of America for sexual abuse by scout leaders.

The law, sponsored by Representatives Bill Seitz (R-Cincinnati) and Jessica E. Miranda (D-Forest Park), eliminates the statute of limitations for a claim of childhood sexual abuse filed against a bankruptcy estate of an organization chartered under federal law.

The law will ensure more monetary compensation for victims by voiding Ohio’s current 12-year statute of limitations on civil claims in bankruptcy cases, allowing them to receive all of the money owed to them, rather than just 30-45%.

Tens of thousands of men nationwide have brought forth claims that they had been sexually abused by their Scout leaders.

Nearly 2,000 of those claims come from Ohio.
