Shots fired at officers amid street racing scene

COLUMBUS – Some Columbus police officers found themselves under fire Saturday night when they responded to reports of a large number of vehicles street racing on the North Side.

Officers sent to the area of 4100 Indianola Avenue at about 11:00 p.m. on a report that approximately 100 vehicles were street racing found spectators congregating in the middle of the street, stopping vehicles and vandalizing them, Sgt. Doug Jones of the felony assault unit said.

When the officers observed the chaos, they tried to settle down the spectators but several gunshots rang out, many aimed at the officers, Jones said.

No one was hurt, the street racers and spectators left the scene and there was no word on any suspects early Monday.

Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to call the Columbus police Felony Assault Unit at 614-645-4141 or Central Ohio Crime Stoppers at 614-461-TIPS (8477).
