Teens shot in downtown drive-by

COLUMBUS – Two teenagers are recovering from injuries suffered in a drive-by shooting on the downtown riverfront late Wednesday night.

Columbus police officers responding to a shooting at the intersection of Civic Center Drive and W. Rich Street at approximately 9:55 p.m. found two boys, age 15 and 16, Sgt. Mark Eickholt of the Felony Assault Unit said.

The shooting happened where hundreds of thousands of people are expected to gather Monday for the annual Red, White & Boom! Independence Day fireworks display.

The older victim had a gunshot wound to his lower body while the younger victim suffered a gunshot wound to his upper body, Eickholt said.

The victims and witnesses reported that an unknown suspect shot at the teens from a dark colored vehicle that fled south on Civic Center Drive, Eickholt said.

Both victims were transported to local hospitals in stable condition.

The case is still under investigation.
