Truck driver dies in I-70 crash

COLUMBUS – A truck driver was killed in a crash that shut down an East Side interstate for several hours Sunday afternoon.

The tractor-trailer was traveling west on I-70 just west of I-270 at approximately 12:49 p.m. when the driver lost control, drove over the wire barriers, crossed the grass median, went westbound in the eastbound lanes, came back across the median and struck the bridge embankment that supports the Woodcrest Road bridge, according to Det. Joseph Fihe of the Columbus Division of Police Accident Investigation Unit.

The driver, whose name was not released, was taken to OhioHealth Grant Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead, Fihe said.

Ohio Department of Transportation personnel examined the bridge and found it to be sound, Fihe said.

The westbound lanes of the interstate were closed at I-270 during the initial investigation.

The Accident Investigation Unit’s investigation is continuing.
