Two shot, one fatally, on Northeast Side

COLUMBUS – A man is in jail on charges of murder and felonious assault stemming from a double shooting on the Northeast Side Monday that left one man dead and another injured, police said.

Patrol officers responding to a Shot Spotter report in the 1600 Block E 26th Avenue at 6:05 p.m. found James Cunningham and another man suffering from gunshot wounds, Sgt. David Shimberg of the Columbus police Homicide Unit said.

Cunningham, 31, was found behind a home and was pronounced dead at the scene while a 32-year-old man was taken to OhioHealth Grant Medical Center in critical condition but Shimberg says he is expected to recover from his injuries.

Investigators questioned Thomas Hampton, 31, and believe he was responsible for the shootings, Shimberg said.

Hampton was charged with murder and felonious assault and taken to the Franklin County Jail.

Preliminary investigation revealed that this incident might have emanated from a disturbance between the three men.

The incident remains under investigation, Shimberg said.

Teens injured in separate shootings

Three teenagers were shot in Columbus over a three-day period, two of them accidentally, according to police.

A 14-year-old boy was treated at OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital and sent home after being shot in his left arm in the University District at approximately 10:59 p.m. Monday, Sgt. Mark Eickholt of the Felony Assault Unit said.

When he was interviewed at the hospital, the teen said he and some friends were in a garage in the 800 block of Chittenden Avenue when the gun being handled by a 19-year-old man went off.

Officers found the firearm and interviews at the scene confirmed 14-year-old’s story, Eickholt said.

There was no information about any charges being filed early Tuesday.

A 14-year-old boy was recovering at Ohio Health Grant Medical Center after being shot on the South Side, Eickholt said.

Officers dispatched to the hospital just after 5:30 p.m. on a report of someone arriving with a gunshot wound made contact with the youth who told them the incident happened in the 100 block of Buffalo Court, though the scene could not be located, Eickholt said.

The investigation continues.

A 16-year-old was recovering after apparently shooting himself by accident on the Far Southeast Side Sunday night, Eickholt said.

Officers dispatched to the 3300 block of Stamford Bridge on a report of a shooting at 9:36 p.m. found the teenager suffering from a gunshot wound to his lower body, Eickholt said.

The boy was taken to Mount Carmel East Hospital where he was stabilized and Eickholt says the shooting is being investigated as an accident.

Anyone with information regarding these incidents is asked to call the Columbus police Felony Assault Unit at 614-645-4141 or Central Ohio Crime Stoppers at 614-461-TIPS (8477).
