“Voice of the ‘Shoe” silenced

DELAWARE – A familiar voice to thousands of central Ohio sports fans, Bob Kennedy, the public address announcer at Ohio Stadium for the past 23 years, died at his home in Delaware over the weekend.

He was 59 years old.

Kennedy was also the PA announcer for a variety of OSU sports, including baseball, men’s and women’s soccer, field hockey, and men’s and women’s hockey, volleyball and swimming and diving.

“Bob had a big heart and he loved his Buckeyes,” Jerry Emig, OSU associate athletic director for communications, said. “He was a true professional at his craft and a friend to us all.”

Kennedy also served as public address announcer for the Columbus Clippers and his alma mater, Otterbein University.

He also worked as on-air talent at WDLR in Delaware.

Kennedy was scheduled to announce the Ohio State baseball game Sunday afternoon against Illinois but, when he did not arrive, university officials contacted local authorities to do a wellness check at his home, Emig said.

Athletics Department officials were informed a short while later that Kennedy had died at his home.
