The Official Drinks for the 150th Anniversary of the Kentucky Derby

May 4th marks the 150th Anniversary of the Kentucky Derby, which means another visit from our friend “Whisky Pete” Wagner, from Brown-Forman to get you prepared for all of the derby cocktail essentials!

First, Pete shows you how to create the “Mint Julep”, which is the official drink of the Kentucky Derby. Made with Old Forester bourbon and fresh mint leaves (smacked, not muddled), this is a must-try for anyone looking for an authentic derby experience. If you plan on being present for the derby, keep an eye out for the special 150th anniversary cups that will be featured around the city.

Next up is the “Woodford Spire”, made with Brown-Forman’s Woodford Reserve bourbon and named after the infamous twin spires atop Churchill Downs. This drink also features fresh lemonade and cranberry juice.

For those that are not a fan of bourbon, Pete shows you how to create the Oaks Lilly, made with Finlandia Vodka and is the official drink of the Kentucky Oaks, which takes place the day before the Derby, featuring filly racing. You’ll notice the drinks beautiful, pink hue, which is symbolic of the proceeds that are donated from the event that help fund breast cancer research.

Finally, the Kentucky Derby isn’t the only big event happening that weekend. It’s also Cinco de Mayo! There’s one drink that will keep you satisfied for the full weekend, and that’s the Herradura Horseshoe Margarita! Your original-style margarita!
